Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. If using, add a few drops of food coloring to reach the desired shade.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Mix Together: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix until just combined. Fold in the chopped maraschino cherries and chocolate chips. Add chopped nuts if using.
- Shape the Cookies: Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart. Press additional chocolate chips gently on top of each cookie dough ball.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. The centers may look slightly undercooked—they will set as they cool.
- Cool: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
