Description

A rich and delicious Caramel Chocolate Fudge Cake with layers of chocolate cake, caramel, and chocolate fudge.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup caramel candies
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Butter or non-stick spray for greasing
  • Cocoa powder for dusting
  • Optional: Whipped cream or ice cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chocolate Cake Layer: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking pan and dust with cocoa powder. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the egg, buttermilk, coffee, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  2. Prepare the Caramel Layer: In a saucepan over low heat, melt the caramel candies with heavy cream, stirring continuously until smooth. Pour the caramel over the cooled chocolate cake layer and spread evenly. Allow it to set.
  3. Prepare the Chocolate Fudge Layer: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, and butter. Microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until the mixture is fully melted and smooth. Pour the chocolate fudge over the caramel layer, spreading evenly.
  4. Assemble the Cake: Allow the entire cake to set in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving.

Notes

  • For a more intense caramel flavor, sprinkle a bit of sea salt over the caramel layer before adding the fudge.
  • Ensure layers have cooled/set adequately before adding the next to maintain distinct layers.
  • Use a hot knife to slice through the cake for cleaner edges.
  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent dessert.
